Most Frequently Asked Questions about BriteSmile

How does it work?

Our system, using gas plasma light technology plus a new proprietary whitening gel, has created a revolutionary method of teeth whitening which quickly, safely and effectively whitens the entire smile at once.

The primary ingredient in BriteSmile's gel is the hydrogen peroxide, which has been safely used in teeth whitening for over 100 years and is recognized as an effective ingredient by the dental community.  Even so, the percentage of hydrogen peroxide in BriteSmile's proprietary gel is less than 15%, far lower than most other whitening products which may contain as much as 35%-50% hydrogen peroxide.
Our innovative light system activates the hydrogen peroxide in the gel and speeds up the whitening procedure – so you leave in just over an hour with your teeth at their optimal natural whiteness, satisfaction guaranteed. The process whitens the teeth an average of 9 shades whiter whereas most other procedures offer as few as a 3-5-shade change.

Is it safe?

Yes. Unlike the "do-it-yourself' take home bleaching systems, our dentists oversee every aspect of your BriteSmile procedure, our dentists will conduct a thorough examination to ensure both teeth and tissue are acceptable.  Your BriteSmile procedure will not soften enamel or damage existing composites or fillings.
Independent safety studies conducted at the University of Dentistry of New Jersey and reviewed by researchers at New York University found conclusively that the BriteSmile procedure resulted in no structural change in teeth.

Will it hurt?

The BriteSmile teeth whitening process is a normally painless.  A very small percentage of people may experience a minor, dull "ache" following the procedure. Taking an ibuprofen or Tylenol almost always resolves the feeling. It is best to avoid very hot or very cold drinks for the first 24 hours if there is any tooth sensitivity.

Is this procedure for everyone?

Yes.  Virtually everyone wanting to brighten his or her teeth can benefit from using BriteSmile, including people with severe food and tobacco or tetracycline stains.  However, extremely dark teeth may require more than one treatment.  Lakewood Cerritos Dental Centers does not offer the BriteSmile procedure to pregnant women at this time.
